APPLICATION NOTE · T8-DSA-501
Whether a machine runs normally is judged against an accepted standard: ISO 10816-3 / GB/T 6075.3 sets vibration limits by machine power and support type. Looking up the tables is tedious and error-prone for routine inspection staff. The module builds the table into the software: from one acceleration signal it converts to velocity, calculates the RMS value and classifies it against the limits. Zone charts for eight combinations (four machine groups × rigid or flexible support) are shown side by side in green, yellow, orange and red, the current result is framed in bold with its value centered, and the title bar states the conclusion — machine group, support, RMS velocity, zone and recommended action — ready for inspection records and acceptance reports.
Vibration is the most direct indicator of a rotating machine's condition: the lower it is, the healthier the machine; excessive vibration means bearing wear, rotor unbalance or loose foundations are developing. ISO 10816-3 (equivalent to GB/T 6075.3) specifies limits for machines of different power and support type and divides machine condition into four zones, A to D, from newly commissioned machines to vibration severe enough to cause damage.
In practice, classification takes several steps: convert the measured acceleration to the RMS velocity required by the standard, find the limit table for the machine power and support, and compare zone by zone. The module automates this. Connect the sensor, select the machine group and the zone appears immediately, with the limits shown as colored zone charts.
| Element | Content | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Machine group area | Eight combinations: large machines (300 kW–50 MW), medium machines (15–300 kW), pumps and others, each on rigid or flexible support | Select by the rated power and foundation of the machine; a wrong group gives a wrong zone |
| Channel selection | Any of eight acquisition channels | The channel with the sensor connected |
| Zone chart | Eight columns, each divided by the limits of its group into green (A), yellow (B), orange (C) and red (D) | Shows on one screen how the machine would rate in other groups |
| Value marker | The current RMS value, for example 1.464 mm/s | Placed in the middle of its zone, which is framed in bold |
| Acceleration waveform | Live raw acceleration | To confirm signal quality (no clipping or obvious interference) |
| Title bar | One-line conclusion: machine group, support, RMS velocity, zone and recommended action | Can be copied into inspection records and acceptance reports |
| Zone | Color | Meaning | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Green | Vibration of newly commissioned machines | Normal operation |
| B | Yellow | Acceptable for unrestricted long-term operation | Routine inspection |
| C | Orange | Not suitable for continuous long-term operation; vibration is elevated | Plan maintenance and monitor more closely |
| D | Red | Vibration severe enough to damage the machine | Stop and inspect immediately |
If the RMS value exceeds the top of the chart, the value is shown in the top zone and does not leave the chart.

| Application | Typical use | Value of the module |
|---|---|---|
| Routine inspection | Attach a sensor at each point and read the zone of each machine | No table lookup; colors show the condition; the title bar conclusion goes straight into the record |
| Acceptance and evaluation after overhaul | Measure again after maintenance and check against zone A or B | Zone A is the level of a newly commissioned machine, a basis consistent with the standard |
| Checking vibration tables and test rigs | Set a target level and check the measured RMS value and deviation | RMS velocity read directly in real time |
| Condition-based maintenance | Evaluate regularly and track zone changes | A change from B to C gives early warning and time to plan maintenance |
| Demonstration and training | Show classification immediately after connection | The color chart explains the vibration standard clearly |
ISO 10816-3 evaluates machine vibration by the RMS value of vibration velocity in mm/s. Velocity reflects vibration energy directly and represents the overall condition of a machine better than displacement or acceleration alone; the RMS value averages the energy over time, resists occasional disturbances and is stable and repeatable.
Most vibration sensors output acceleration. Mathematically, velocity is the integral of acceleration, but direct integration amplifies low-frequency drift and integrates noise into large values. The module uses frequency-domain integration:
The process runs only in the 10–1000 Hz band specified by the standard, so drift and high-frequency noise outside it are excluded. Window amplitude correction compensates the small amplitude reduction caused by analyzing a section of the signal, so the reading matches the true vibration.
The RMS velocity is compared with the limits of the selected group, and the zone it falls in is the result. The limits for all eight combinations are built in, so no manual lookup is needed.
| Standard | Title | Use in the module |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 10816-3 | Mechanical vibration — Evaluation of machine vibration by measurements on non-rotating parts — Part 3: industrial machines measured in situ | Source of the limits: zones A/B/C/D for four machine groups × rigid and flexible supports |
| GB/T 6075.3 | Equivalent national standard | Allows reports to cite the national standard |
The standard groups machines by power and support and gives zone boundaries for each group (mm/s RMS):
| Machine group | Support | A/B | B/C | C/D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Large machines (300 kW–50 MW) | Rigid | 2.3 | 4.5 | 7.1 |
| Large machines (300 kW–50 MW) | Flexible | 3.5 | 7.1 | 11.0 |
| Medium machines (15–300 kW) | Rigid | 1.4 | 2.8 | 4.5 |
| Medium machines (15–300 kW) | Flexible | 2.3 | 4.5 | 7.1 |
The pump groups and their limits are also built in according to the standard. Values below the A/B boundary are zone A, and so on; values above the C/D boundary are zone D.
Determine the support classification from the applicable standard and the machine/support dynamic characteristics, using documented design or modal evidence. Do not classify a running machine by pressing on its bearing housing. If the classification is unknown, withhold the zone conclusion until it is established.
Hypothetical arithmetic example: if a machine is correctly classified as group 2 on rigid support and the applicable boundaries are 1.4 and 2.8 mm/s, a reading of 1.464 mm/s falls between them. The source example has conflicting support and zone labels, so this is not a verified classification of that machine or an operating authorization.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Why does the same machine get different zones in different groups? | The limits depend on power and support (for example, the A/B boundary is 1.4 mm/s for medium machines on rigid support and 2.3 mm/s for large machines on rigid support). Select the group that matches the rated power for a meaningful result. |
| Where and in which direction should the sensor be mounted? | On the bearing housing (a non-rotating part), preferably in two orthogonal directions, horizontal and vertical. Evaluate each and use the worse one for that point. |
| What does a value shown in the top zone mean? | The RMS value exceeds the top of the chart for that group, which is always zone D. The value is kept in the top zone so it does not leave the chart. |
| What should I do about a “no valid data” message? | The system checks that the acquired data is long enough for the analysis. Check that acquisition has started and the channel is wired correctly, then refresh. |
| What should I do about a zone C result? | Vibration is elevated and the machine should not run continuously in the long term. Plan maintenance, shorten the measurement interval and track the trend; acting before zone D is reached costs least. |
